5 Reasons to Become a Supply Teacher

Why is it that supply teachers get such a bad rep?

They’re often labelled as ‘failed teachers’ who can’t land a secure job, but we’re going to go ahead and challenge that theory. Sure, permanent work offers familiarity, routine, and security, but supply teaching has many benefits that are so worth considering!
Think you know everything there is to know about supply teaching? These five points will have you thinking again…

One: Experience

Supply teaching gives you the opportunity to dip into a variety of settings. You could be teaching Yr3 one day and Yr6 the next, or if you’re in a secondary school setting, art one lesson and physics the following! Working on supply allows you to find your niche and discover where your strengths lie – maybe it’s different to what you initially thought!

Two: Flexibility

Working as a supply teacher gives you the freedom to be your own boss (at least with the SupplyNow app!). You can decide when, where and how often you work, which makes finding a work-life balance a whole lot easier. It's no longer a problem booking an off-peak holiday or attending that awkward mid-week wedding!

Three: Relocation

Similarly, working on supply also gives you the flexibility to move around and ‘try before you buy’, letting you check out different schools and areas before committing to one permanently. If you get itchy feet or feel like you need a change of scenery, even just temporarily, supply teaching jobs give you the freedom to pick yourself up and go.

Four: Freedom from paperwork

Full-time teaching can come with a lot of paperwork: targets, assessments, school policies, meetings and planning. As a supply teacher, you’ll see far fewer tasks like these – hallelujah!

Five: Education

If you're looking to continue your studies, supply teaching offers the perfect way to earn while you learn. Not only can you have more control over your work schedule so that you can fit teaching around your studies, but you’re also keeping up with what happens in the world of education.

How to become a supply teacher?

Becoming a supply teacher is a relatively straightforward process. First, you must have Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and experience in the classroom; then you need to find a source that will connect you with the perfect supply teaching jobs.

Traditionally, Supply Teachers have had to sit waiting for a call or email from their teaching agency to update them about a job post. Thanks to SupplyNow, the control back is back in the hands of Supply Teachers.

If you decide that you would like to become one of SupplyNow’s Supply Heroes, all you need to do is download our app from the App Store or Google Play. Once you’ve registered, we’ll organise a brief call with you to run over the types of jobs you’re looking for and where. When you’ve completed your checks, you’ll be ready to begin searching for and accepting placements!

How much does a supply teacher earn?

Our Supply Heroes are covered by the SupplyNow #FairPayNow Guarantee. What does this mean? We ensure the best supply teacher rates in Kent, Surrey and West Sussex (London, we’re heading your way), and if you find an agency offering more for an equivalent job, we promise to beat it!

Supply teachers, we will offer you a minimum of £150 per day. Cover teachers, you can earn £100+ and Supply Teaching Assistants make a daily rate of £80 or more.

So, if you’re in the south-east, you know who you want to register with!

Why Choose SupplyNow?

Besides our unbeatable daily rates, SupplyNow gives you a direct connection with schools and puts control of the jobs you work in your hands. Our app allows you to filter the posts you get alerts for, giving you the option to narrow down your locations, pay rate, subjects taught and favourite schools. Once your preferences are in place, our clever system will match the jobs that meet your requirements and send a notification directly to your device the moment a school posts it - no waiting for a recruiter to pass on the message, you hear it first!

We haven’t even told you the best part yet; not only are we paying supply staff more but we’re also charging schools up to 20% less than traditional teaching agencies! To us, educators are heroes and deserve to be treated as such – starting with fair pay and fair supply fees.

When can I leave my permanent teaching job?

Resignation dates for teachers are as follows:

  • Autumn term – 31 October
  • Winter term – 28/29 February
  • Spring term – 31 May
